Mashaal Welfare Trust is a community-driven, non-profit and non-political organisation based in Thana, Malakand. The work runs from humanitarian response and family support through to environmental action and youth-led initiatives, and it is carried out by volunteers who live in the same streets as the households they work with.

What we do

Five areas of work, one district.

Each one runs year round rather than at festivals, and every distribution is published afterwards.

  1. 01

    Humanitarian Response

    A household survey before a single package moves.

    After the floods, volunteers walked the streets and recorded households door to door before anything was bought. Distribution follows that list, handed over in person, with transparent lists and plain receipts.

    Environment

    Planting where the hillside has been stripped.

    Community plantation drives on schoolyards, public ground and roadside that has lost its cover, planted by the people who live alongside it. This is the work that became Sheen Malakand.

    Youth and Education

    No child should leave school over a fee.

    School costs covered for families who cannot carry them, book boxes placed where students already walk past, and study circles that keep young people reading after the school day ends.

    Community Development

    A household set up, rather than a household in debt.

    The Rozgaar project puts families in a position to earn. Alongside it sits ongoing support for children in care, and home essentials for brides whose families would otherwise borrow at interest.

    Climate Awareness

    Awareness that turns into something you can see.

    Climate study circles, eco-bag distribution and campaigns to cut plastic use through the bazaar. Awareness work only counts here when it ends in an activity somebody can point at.

Relief drives

When it cannot wait.

Alongside the year-round programmes the trust runs emergency and seasonal drives: the flood response in Buner and Swat, ration through Ramadan, and parcels at Eid.

Emergency response

Flood relief in Buner and Swat

Flash floods tore through Buner and Swat in August 2025, taking homes, food stores and belongings with them. A team of more than twenty-five set out as soon as the picture was clear, running four drives in Buner and four in Swat over long roads and rough weather. They carried food packs, clean water, clothes and medicines, cooked meals on site where families had no way to cook, and stayed late so nobody was missed. Tabedaar Delivery collected donated goods from people’s homes; CHIP NGO joined them for a further 110 packages in Swat.

Ramadan

The Ramadan ration drive

Households are verified before the drive begins, then ration packages go out in phases across the month so families can keep Suhoor and Iftar without worrying about the next week. The 2026 drive reached 200 families. Earlier phases ran alongside the Truman Foundation, who distributed 100 packages with the trust in Thana Malakand, and Yaksaniyat Welfare Foundation in Palai. The month closes with an Iftar at the Kafalat orphanage.

Eid gifts for orphans

Eid parcels are made up and handed over in person, each one labelled. The 2025 drive reached 104 orphans with dresses, shoes, bakery items, chicken and rice, along with cash Eidi so the day is theirs to spend. As with every distribution, it was photographed and published afterwards.

Sheen Malakand

Sheen Malakand is the trust’s environmental programme: plantation drives, climate study circles, eco-bag distribution and work to cut plastic use through the bazaar. It runs on community participation rather than on contractors, which is why the same faces appear on the hillside, in the classrooms and in the clean-up photographs.
